Between semantics and epistemology of language
Abstrakt
In the book Between Semantics and Epistemology of Language, Marián Zouhar returns to his central theme - the reference of proper names and description. He seeks in it a sharper demarcation line that separates semantics from extra-semantic factors entering communication. This line is ignored, for example, by referentialism, according to which descriptions are referring expressions. Zouhar convincingly criticizes this position. He further defends the justification for applying idealizations and simplifications in the semantic theory of natural language. His definition of rigid designation and the distinction between Kripke's concept of rigidity and Putnam's concept deserve special attention. He justifies the more general theses of his work in detail with a substantive analysis of the concepts that appear in them and the relevant types of linguistic expressions to which they refer. We can welcome Zouhar's monograph not only as a significant and original contribution to the development of semantics and philosophy of language in Slovakia, but also as a remarkable intellectual achievement that will certainly attract the attention of a wider community of philosophers, logicians, linguists and others interested in logical-semantic and philosophical issues of language.
