This book discusses the development of Slovak society against the background of the basic historical trends of the 20th century. The decisive process of this period was the competition of political and economic blocs for world power. However, it was also about the efforts of societies located on the periphery and semi-periphery to catch up with the countries of the center, about state and national emancipation and about the new position of the individual in relation to historically created collectivities. All these processes were parts of the “modern project”, in which man understood himself as the “lord and owner of nature” and where individual historical forms are nothing more than different ways of realizing this dominion.
