Denotation, reference and meaning
Abstrakt
The volume Denotation, Reference and Meaning brings together a collection of papers in analytic philosophy of language, logic, and philosophy of mind that systematically investigate the relations between linguistic meaning, denotation, and reference. The contributors address both classical and contemporary issues in theories of meaning, including the nature of sense and reference, the semantics of proper names, the communicative dimension of reference, intentional and propositional attitudes, and the semantic properties of mental states. The volume integrates logical and semantic analysis with perspectives from philosophy of mind, epistemology, and the methodology of the social sciences and humanities. Special attention is paid to the question of whether reference should be understood primarily as a semantic or a pragmatic phenomenon, as well as to the relation between linguistic constructions, intensional entities, and mental representations. Several contributions extend the traditional scope of philosophy of language to less explored domains, such as music and the social sciences. Overall, the volume offers an interdisciplinary and methodologically rigorous examination of core concepts in analytic philosophy and constitutes a significant contribution to ongoing debates on meaning, reference, and understanding in language and thought.
