The monograph Fate and Choice. Paradoxes of Rationalization – Max Weber as a Diagnostician of Modern Culture offers an original and interpretatively stimulating analysis of the work of Max Weber, going beyond traditional sociological and methodological readings. The author has chosen an anthropological interpretative framework in which Weber appears primarily as a thinker analyzing the existential situation of modern man and his fundamental need for meaningfulness. Novosád systematically elaborates Weber's concept of social action, rationalization, science, capitalism, and politics in the broader historical and intellectual context of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The focus of the interpretation is the concept of rationalization as a process that permeates all spheres of modern life and leads to paradoxical consequences, especially bureaucratization, disenchantment of the world, and the fatality of capitalism. The author convincingly shows that Weber's thinking moves at the intersection of historiography, sociology, philosophy, and religious studies, while emphasizing the fluidity of the boundaries between these disciplines. Special attention is paid to the genealogy of capitalism, the conflicts of "orders of life" and Weber's understanding of politics as a tension between fate and choice. The publication represents a well-founded and conceptually unified introduction to Weber's work, which at the same time opens up new interpretative possibilities in the context of modernity and postmodern discussions. Despite some controversial points, especially on the issue of ideal types and value neutrality of knowledge, it is a significant contribution to the domestic philosophical and social scientific discourse and a stimulating call for a deeper study of Max Weber.
