Professor Jozef Viceník is a renowned and respected methodologist and philosopher of science. J. Viceník was born on December 11, 1941 in Trnava. He worked at the Department of Logic of the Faculty of Philosophy of Comenius University in Bratislava; he was appointed a university professor in the field in 2000. He also worked as a vice-dean at the Faculty of Philosophy, headed the Department of Logic and Methodology of Science (1984–1988) and directed the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava (since 1990 the Institute of Philosophy of the Slovak Academy of Sciences). He worked as a researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the Slovak Academy of Sciences until 2013. J. Viceník led several successful projects and served on the editorial boards of journals. His pedagogical activities included lectures on logic, methodology of science, philosophy of science and theory of knowledge. J. Viceník scientifically followed up on the work of V. Filkorn and the Poznań School of Methodology of Science. His lasting contribution to the field of methodology of sciences includes his analyses of scientific law, scientific methods, the nature and structure of explanation, practical reasoning, and rationality. Together with Professor V. Černík, he is the founder of the so-called Bratislava methodological school, which has been followed by several generations of Slovak methodologists and philosophers of science. J. Viceník is one of those exceptional personalities who combine pedagogical talent with scientific erudition. His work at the Institute of Philosophy (formerly the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology), but also at several Slovak universities, undoubtedly contributed to the increase of academic culture and the deepening of critical thinking of colleagues and students.
