Chinese Early Modernity and Civilization: A Seminar with Prof. Leigh Jenco

The Institute of Philosophy of the Slovak Academy of Sciences invites you to a seminar titled “Chinese Early Modernity and Civilization: A Philosophical Conversation“, to be held on October 26, 2026 (Monday), from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Institute’s premises, Room 94, 4th floor (Klemensova 19, Bratislava).

The lecture will be delivered by Professor Leigh Jenco of the London School of Economics and Political Science, a distinguished expert in political theory and Chinese political thought. Her research focuses primarily on the cross-cultural transmission of political ideas, the history of Chinese thought, and the potential for developing global and comparative political theory.

The seminar will address philosophical questions regarding Chinese early modernity and civilization, specifically the transitional period between the Ming and Qing dynasties in the 16th and 17th centuries. Attention will also be given to methods of preserving and transmitting knowledge, as well as the experiences of non-elite strata of Chinese society.

The event is organized within the framework of the international project “Cosmopolitanism and Tianxia: Toward the Shared Grounds of Mutually Beneficial and Respectful Understanding in Global Political Thought” (SAS-NSTC-JRP-2025-07).
