Dmytro Tomakha’s graduation!

We would like to inform you that our colleague Dmytro Tomakh graduated and received a PhD degree.! His dissertation supervisor was our researcher Jon Stewart.

Dmytro Tomakh comes from Kyiv, Ukraine, and has been living in Slovakia for nine years. He completed his bachelor’s and master’s studies in the field of political science at the University of Trnava in Trnava. During his studies, he became more interested in philosophy, and therefore decided to continue his doctoral studies at the Institute of Philosophy of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

He has been devoted to the history of ideas for a long time, especially the thinking of the 19th century. His attention was first attracted by Russian philosophy of this period, and after his arrival in Slovakia also Slovak thought of the 19th century. In this context, he was interested in the discussion about the influence of the Russian intellectual environment on the thinking of Ľudovít Štúr, which he subsequently addressed in his dissertation research.

In his dissertation “Ideological influence of Russian philosophical and political discourse of the 19th century on the thinking of Ľudovít Štúr” he investigated Štúr’s communication with Russian intellectuals and the degree of their ideological influence on his thinking. He came to the conclusion that Štúr saw potential ideological allies in some of them, with whom he shared a similar view on the issues of the nation and Slavs.

However, his research questioned the notion of a significant ideological influence of Russian thinkers on Štúr. A comparison of philosophical and methodological starting points showed that, despite the similarity of some political positions, their ideological bases were incompatible. According to Dmytro Tomakh, Štúr’s idealistic and uncritical attitudes after the revolution were the result of his own thought development.

Dmytro also successfully presented himself during his doctoral studies. At the fourth year of the scientific seminar of successful doctoral students of SAV, which took place on June 24, 2024, he became the absolute winner within the Department of Sciences of the SAV company.

In his research, he plans to continue to devote himself to the philosophy of the 19th century, this time with an emphasis on German idealism and romanticism.

We heartily congratulate Dmytro on obtaining the PhD degree. and wish him much success in his further scientific work!
