International Conference Modal Metaphysics: Issues on the (Im)Possible (I)X

On 7 and 8 June, the Institute of Philosophy of the Slovak Academy of Sciences organized an international conference Modal Metaphysics: Issues on the (Im)Possible. Over the past ten years, the conference has attracted philosophers from all corners of the world, and the outcomes of its lectures have shaped current trends in philosophical research in analytic metaphysics in general, and in questions of modalities in particular.

This year, five presenters accepted the invitation: Sondra Bacharach (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand), John Divers (Trinity College Dublin, Ireland), Marie Duží (VSB Technical University of Ostrava, Czech Republic), Graham Priest (The City University of New York, USA) and David Shoemaker (Cornell University, USA). While unforeseen circumstances prevented Maria Duží from attending the conference, the remaining plenary speakers made remarkable contributions about their innovative research. Plenary lectures focused appropriately on practice-oriented topics in ethics and aesthetics (David Shoemaker and Sondra Bacharach) and more abstract topics in metaphysics, logic, and metaontology (Graham Priest and John Divers). The received lectures covered participants from 16 countries around the world.

Konferenciu štedro podporil projekt University of Oxford “New Horizons for Science and Religion in Central and Eastern Europe” financovaný s podporou John Templeton Foundation (“Pavel Tichý on Individuals, Roles, and God” subgrant; www.tichyproject.com), VEGA 2/015/22 (“Responsibility and Modal Logic” projekt) a Slovenským filozofickým združením pri SAV.
