The Institute of Philosophy of the Slovak Academy of Sciences invites you to a two-day international philosophical conference entitled Heidegger, Taoism and Intercultural Thought Today, which will take place on 21 and 22 May 2024 in the Central Library of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (Klemensova 19, Bratislava).
The philosophical paths of the German philosopher, founder of fundamental ontology, Martin Heidegger (1889 – 1976), who was a pupil and follower of the founder of phenomenology, Edmund Husserl, were influenced by East Asian sources of thought during his lifetime in the 20th century. Not only did Heidegger dialogue, befriend, and even collaborate with Chinese and Japanese intellectuals throughout his lifetime, but his lectures and writings have directly and indirectly interpreted Taoist and other East Asian philosophical sources for decades. Heidegger’s investigations remain crucial and relevant for encounters and dialogues between European and East Asian philosophies and for intercultural thinking in the 21st century.
In response to the recently published scholarly monographs on Heidegger and Taoist philosophy, in particular the books “Heidegger and Dao: Things, Nothingness, Freedom” (Bloomsbury, 2023) by Professor Eric S. Nelson and “Daoist Resonances in Heidegger: Exploring a Forgotten Debt” (Bloomsbury, 2022) compiled by Professor David Chai, the conference papers presented at this event will explore questions and topics focused on Martin Heidegger’s thinking, Taoist or East Asian philosophy and the current possibilities and pitfalls of intercultural dialogue and contemporary philosophy.
“It is an indisputable success that our institute has managed to organize a conference in Slovakia after a long time, based on established international cooperation, with the active participation of internationally recognized and extremely respected researchers from prestigious foreign universities and academic workplaces, who specialize in East Asian and German philosophy in their research from a comparative perspective and within this symbiosis look for opportunities for intercultural dialogue between European and German philosophy. East Asian thinking,” says Richard Stahel, director of the Institute of Philosophy of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and a member of the organizing committee of the conference.
For example, the American professor of philosophy Eric S. Nelson (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology), renowned Slovenian sinologist and philosopher Professor Jana S. Rošker (University of Ljubljana), Mario Wenning (Loyola University Andalusia), American professor of philosophy David Chai (Chinese University of Hong Kong), Chinese professor of philosophy Xia Kejun (Renmin University of China, Beijing)
