Prize for Scientific and Professional Literature for 2003 in the category of social sciences
PhDr. Daniela Dvořáková, CSc. for “The Knight and His King. (Stibor of Stiborice and Sigismund of Luxembourg)”, Rak Publishing House
It is an original historical monograph based on original authorial research, as well as a complex heuristic of sources: archival, literary, historical-archaeological, art-historical artefacts, etc. In addition to the author’s demanding research, the work surprises not only with its scope, but above all with its content, interpretive mastery, cultivated and fresh language and graphic design. The book is very beneficial not only in terms of the choice of topic, but especially its content. Its value lies, among other things, in the fact that it is the first and at the same time pioneering work from the Middle Ages. It is no exaggeration to say that such a title appears once a decade.

Prize for Scientific and Professional Literature for 2003 in the category of encyclopaedic and dictionary literature
Ing. Ján Pravda, DrSc. for the “Brief Lexicon of Cartography”, VEDA Publishing House
The Brief Lexicon of Cartography is a pioneering work in our conditions, which ranks Slovakia among the developed countries of the world in terms of processing and publishing cartographic lexicons and encyclopedias. It is intended for all those interested (laymen and specialists, students and doctoral students) in fields in which maps are used: in addition to cartography, these are mainly geodesy, geography and other natural science disciplines. With regard to the huge amount of collected material, precision and quality of processed entries, it can be described as unique in the field of encyclopaedic creation in Slovakia.

Prize for Scientific and Professional Literature for 2003 in the category of biological and medical sciences
Prof. Anton Heretik, MD, CSc., Mgr. Anton Heretik, PhDr. Prof. MUDr. Vladimír Novotný, CSc., MUDr. Ján Pečeňák, CSc. and Doc. PhDr. Alojz Ritomský, CSc.
for “EPID. Epidemiology of Depression in Slovakia”, Psychoprof Publishing House
The monograph is the output of the first epidemiological research in the field of mental disorders, which was carried out on a representative set of Slovak citizens (1212 participants). An interdisciplinary team (2 psychologists, 2 psychiatrists, 1 statistician) presents and interprets the results of the 6-month prevalence of depression and actual depression at the time of the examination. The obtained data are interpreted in terms of regional and national differences, gender differences, age, education, professional and family status, strategies and coping with depressive difficulties in Slovak citizens and other features. The findings are compared with the results of foreign studies in the EU and the USA. The results of the research are important for both clinical practice and the organization of health care in the field of mental health.

Prize for Scientific and Professional Literature for 2003 in the category of natural and technical sciences
Prof. RNDr. Juraj Hromkovič, DrSc. for “Theoretical Computer Science”, SPRINGER-VERLAG Publishing House
The book is an introduction to theoretical computer science. The author addresses it to students-computer scientists and adapts the form of the presentation accordingly. The whole text is written extremely vividly and engagingly. The reader is drawn into the “plot”, he feels that he understands what the subject of the book is, and its study becomes intellectual entertainment. From every page, the book radiates the author’s enthusiasm for theoretical computer science, it is written with brilliant ease and elegance. Without any doubt, it deserves the Award.
