New book! The Extent of Impossibility: The Case of Modal Realism

The Institute of Philosophy of the Slovak Academy of Sciences would like to inform you about a new book entitled “The Extent of Impossibility: The Case of Modal Realism” (2025), which is published by Palgrave Macmillan.

The book explores the concept of impossible worlds. Although the concept of an impossible world itself is not new, several misunderstandings and distortions have led to philosophical ambiguities. To avoid such ambiguities, the analysis here distinguishes between the logical, semantic, epistemological, and metaphysical tasks of impossible worlds. The central hypothesis of the book argues that an understandable taxonomy of extreme attitudes towards impossible worlds is needed; It is not easy to hold a middle position without taking these extreme positions seriously. These attitudes are compared with each other in order to draw important lessons for logic, epistemology, and metaphysics. The Extent of Impossibility is essential literature for scholars in the field of philosophy, especially those who focus on metaphysics, logic, and epistemology.
