
Prof. PhDr. Pavel Cmorej, CSc., was an important Slovak logician and the founder of analytical philosophy in Slovakia. He was born on January 1, 1937 in Spišské Podhradie. He left us on January 16, 2025 in Bratislava, at the age of 88. His academic and scientific activities left a deep mark in the field of logic and philosophy.
Academic career
Prof. Cmorej graduated in philosophy and psychology from the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava in 1961. After completing his military service in 1963, he began working at the Department of Logic and Methodology of Sciences of the same faculty, first as an assistant and from 1970 as a specialist. During the normalization period, he was prevented from teaching and until 1985 he did not even publish. Since 1990 he has worked at the Institute of Philosophy of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He lectured externally at several Slovak universities, including the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava, the Faculty of Arts of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Prešov and the Faculty of Arts of Trnava University in Trnava, where he focused on logic and analytic philosophy.
Scientific contribution
In his scientific work, prof. Cmorej focused on logical semantics, intensional and epistemic logic, as well as on philosophical problems of logic and analytic philosophy. Among his notable publications are studies such as “Synonymity and Extensional Ismorphy” (1969), “Some Problems of Synonymy of Linguistic Expressions” (1970) and “From Extensional Semantics to Intensional” (1990). His works were closely related to the work of the Czech logician Pavel Tichý, while he also devoted himself to the applications of Tichý’s intensional logic.
Awards and recognitions
Prof. Cmorej was appointed Professor of Systematic Philosophy in 2001. In 2007, the Slovak Academy of Sciences awarded him the Gold Medal on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Slovak Academy of Sciences for his contribution to the development of philosophical sciences in Slovakia.
Prof. Pavel Cmorej has made a significant contribution to the development of logic and analytical philosophy not only in Slovakia. His scientific work and pedagogical activity will certainly leave a lasting legacy at least in our academic community.
